About Billingsgate

Asian grocery stores and supermarkets stock ingredients, snacks and household goods that general American supermarkets often do not carry, organized by category rather than by country of origin in most stores. Produce and live or fresh seafood sections are usually at the back or side of the store, and weekend mornings bring the largest crowds and freshest restock. Many larger Asian supermarkets include a hot deli or food court counter selling prepared meals by the pound or as fixed plates, useful for a quick lunch while shopping. Labels are frequently bilingual or untranslated, so store staff can usually help locate a specific ingredient if you ask. Cash, cards and mobile pay are all commonly accepted at larger chains; smaller specialty shops may be cash-preferred.
Hours are published for 7 days a week. Typical hours are 9 am–7 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. The listed phone number is (510) 250-6007. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. More information is available on its website, billingsgatesf.com.
On Google it holds a rating of 4.5 out of 5 from 59 reviews, which is a strong result for a seafood market in Oakland and suggests consistent service.
Oakland is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Getting around Oakland is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across California's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

I don’t think they know what they’re doing. I bought a fillet once and it still had bones. I bought a whole fish and the cut for the gut was poorly done. They did ask if I wanted it scaled, but when I went to clean it before prep, the gills were still there. If you want fish, the quality is nice, but you’re better off going to other options in the area.

I’ve been shopping at Market Hall for over two decades. While Billingsgate recently took over for the previous seafood shop, I am so happy that Michelle and Pedro have continued to work in this department over the years, as their customer service is totally top notch! Michelle really goes above and beyond. It makes my day to see her and know that she will absolutely take good care of me. Pedro is also very knowledgeable and greets me with a smile. Fresh seafood, helpful staff and some really yummy offerings if you’re in the mood to have a bite right there. Thanks so much guys!!

Amazing seafood. The crab in the prepared salad was beyond excellent. This vendor has pristine products and a nice choice of made-to-order food. Sorry to hear a number of folks had poor service (I’ve been ignored too at worthy food places—just give them a chance; they are very new). One person gave a one-star rating because her sandwich from the former vendor was not on new vendor Billingsgate’s menu. Really? This is a much more sophisticated business than Hapuku. I thank Billingsgate for their excellent seafood, takeaway offerings and professional staff (that might still be so new they just need tines to be better).

Contrary to the previous reviews, I actually had a pleasant experience with this merchant. Keep in mind that Rockridge market is packed, especially if you go on a weekend. I waited patiently, asked for recommendations from staff, and kept my interaction concise to keep the flow of traffic. Food was fantastic. Clean, simple, and fresh. Price is as expected because of location and caliber of seafood cuisine

I have been a patron of Market Hall Foods for almost two decades, I love how everything is fresh and how the buyers keep finding new exciting things to try. In these years I enjoyed getting fresh fish and prepared foods from their fish and seafood counter. The clam chowder and fish and chips were excellent treats! Well… there’s a new kid in town and they are not friendly to me (I figure to anyone who looks like me). I was reading their menu today -poorly displayed with tiny font- and I was excited to get some ceviche, until I saw another lady being cheerful and aggressively pursued by a man and a woman who were awfully close to me but had completely ignored me. They greeted her, offered to answer her questions and gave recommendations, to which she started walking away… I was looking at them, still invisible. Now, IDKY but I no longer spend my money at places where I am not welcome, or where anybody is being treated as “less than”… I took a picture of the scene and the man immediately jumped and said an intimidating “good morning” staring at me. Should you remember that money comes in all shades and purses in the Bay Area, try to overcome your color blindness (blind only to col
